Austria survey shows mixed public support for sugar tax

A representative Marketagent survey of 1,000 Austrians reveals mixed public sentiment regarding the introduction of a sugar tax on highly sweetened beverages and processed foods. While 63 percent of respondents generally support a levy on high-sugar products, there is significant skepticism regarding its effectiveness and economic impact.

Concerns include potential price increases, with 47.4 percent fearing higher costs for consumers. Additionally, 41.9 percent doubt a tax would solve the underlying health issues, and 38.2 percent worry about the disproportionate burden on low-income households. Regarding consumer behavior, approximately one-third of respondents indicated they would switch to lower-sugar alternatives, while an equal number might opt for cheaper brands.

Rather than punitive taxes, there is notable support for alternative fiscal measures. Approximately 39.1 percent of participants favor tax relief for fruits, vegetables, and other foods that promote a healthy lifestyle. Marlies Gruber, Managing Director of the forum ernährung heute (f. eh), suggested that the results serve as a call to action for policymakers to adopt a holistic approach combining positive incentives, nutritional education, and increased physical activity.
