Austria to end paper motorway vignette, adopt digital‑only system from 2027

The Austrian government announced that the traditional adhesive motorway vignette will be discontinued after the 2026 sales period. From 1 February 2027 only a digital vignette, linked to the vehicle’s license plate, will be valid on Austrian highways and expressways. The change ends the dual system that has existed since 2017. About 75 % of drivers already use the digital version, and the new system will be sold online, at service stations, toll booths, and authorized dealers. The 2026 annual vignette price rose 2.9 % to €106.80, with short‑term options also increasing.

People with disabilities will receive a free digital annual vignette and complimentary multi‑use toll cards for selected tunnels and routes, including the Bosruck‑, Gleinalm‑, Tauern‑, Katschbergtunnel, the Brenner‑Autobahn and the Arlbergtunnel. Eligibility requires an Austrian disability card stating that public transport is unreasonable, residence in Austria, and a vehicle registered to the person. The free benefits are administered through the car‑insurance register, eliminating a separate application to ASFINAG. Drivers without a valid vignette after the transition will face fines.
