Austria’s coalition government plans to lengthen compulsory military service from six to nine months, with the change to take effect on 1 January 2027. The reform is presented as a response to the security environment altered by Russia’s war in Ukraine and the rise of hybrid and cyber threats. Chancellor Christian Stocker said the security conditions have fundamentally changed and that Austria must become more self‑reliant.

The proposal adds a reservist model requiring conscripts to attend follow‑up exercises within ten years, introduces additional holiday days, and almost doubles the monthly pay to €1,000. A voluntary two‑month extension of the civilian service is also planned. The legislation needs a two‑thirds parliamentary majority and support from opposition parties such as the Greens.

If the reform fails to meet recruitment targets, a statutory trigger could make a two‑month mandatory extension of the civilian service automatic from 2028. The reforms will be evaluated in 2028.
