Austria implements new transport rules for e-mopeds and digital vignettes

Austria is implementing several significant transport and mobility changes. Starting October 1, 2026, e-mopeds will be banned from bicycle paths in Vienna. These vehicles will now require official road registration, license plates, insurance, a valid driver's license, and mandatory helmet use. The city and police will conduct strict inspections to ensure safety for pedestrians and cyclists, as many e-mopeds are reportedly too heavy and fast for shared paths.

In terms of broader national policy, the Austrian government is introducing a fuel price brake for October and November 2026, aimed at reducing gasoline and diesel costs by approximately 12.2 cents per liter. Additionally, the country will transition entirely to digital highway vignettes by February 1, 2027, phasing out the traditional adhesive stickers to modernize the system.

Other regional updates include a three-week trial of e-scooter restrictions in Wiener Neustadt, where riding in pedestrian zones is now limited to nighttime hours to improve safety. Meanwhile, ASFINAG is evaluating nighttime speed limits on certain motorways to manage traffic flow and noise levels.
