Austria implements headscarf ban for students under 14

Starting with the 2026/27 academic year, Austria has implemented a ban on headscarves for female students under the age of 14 in both public and private schools. The regulation mandates that teachers monitor compliance, with a disciplinary process involving warnings, parental meetings, and potential fines ranging from 150 to 800 Euros. Continued non-compliance may lead to imprisonment for up to two weeks.

The government defends the measure as a way to protect young girls from religious and patriarchal pressure. However, the policy faces significant legal and social opposition. The Austrian Constitutional Court previously struck down a similar ban in 2020 on the grounds of religious neutrality, creating uncertainty regarding the current law's legal standing.

In response to the ban, youth organizations affiliated with the SPÖ have called for a school strike and a demonstration in Vienna to protest against perceived racism and sexism. Conversely, members of the FPÖ have welcomed the decision, characterizing it as a necessary protection for the free development of children.
