Austria to launch integration workshops for teachers
Austrian Integration Minister Claudia Bauer has announced the development of workshops and seminars to support teachers facing integration challenges in schools. Following a meeting at the Chancellery with educators and directors, the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF), led by expert Emina Saric, will create these resources to be offered both online and in person nationwide.
The initiative aims to help educators recognize and address problematic developments, such as religious-based conflicts, cultural pressure, and issues regarding gender roles, without turning teachers into “policemen in the classroom.”
These measures follow reports from educators regarding difficult classroom conditions. In some areas, such as Vienna, teachers have noted significant language barriers, with some classes containing very few native German speakers. Other reports highlight instances of social pressure, such as students being coerced into wearing headscarves, and a lack of motivation among some students who allegedly aim for poor grades to maintain family eligibility for social benefits.
