AHS teachers advocate for school-based digital equipment

Austrian secondary school (AHS) teachers are calling for a shift in digital education strategy due to budget cuts and pedagogical concerns. Starting in the 2027/28 school year, the distribution of laptops or tablets to students will be delayed from the first year to the second year of middle school and AHS lower secondary levels.

Georg Stockinger, chairman of the AHS teachers' union, has expressed skepticism regarding the current device initiative, which costs approximately 50 million euros per school year. He suggests that instead of providing individual devices to students, funds might be better spent equipping schools with hardware for collective use, citing the Finnish model where children develop foundational skills before using digital tools.

Stockinger also highlighted significant challenges in the 'Digital Basic Education' curriculum, including a shortage of qualified teachers and discrepancies between curriculum goals and classroom reality. Furthermore, publishers are working under tight deadlines to develop textbooks and materials for new subjects, including 'Media and Democracy' and 'Informatics and AI,' as curriculum regulations are still being finalized.
