Austria to mark National Day with military displays and Democracy Week
Austria will observe its National Day on October 26, marking the departure of the last occupation troops. The celebrations include a major presentation by the Austrian Armed Forces at Heldenplatz in Vienna. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner stated that the event aims to make the military “tangible” to the public, featuring a performance showcase and an induction ceremony for approximately 1,200 recruits.
Minister Tanner emphasized that while Austria's neutrality remains a core part of its identity, the military is essential for defending peace and security in an increasingly uncertain world.
In conjunction with the holiday, the Bündnis 2025 alliance is launching its second Democracy Week. The initiative aims to promote democratic values, the rule of law, and media independence while opposing extremism. Highlights include a nationwide “sound cloud” event where 1,000 singers will perform simultaneously across all federal states, as well as various local discussions and vigils regarding freedom of expression and social climate.
