Austria to phase out adhesive vignettes and increase vehicle taxes by 2027

Austria is implementing significant changes to its transport and taxation systems scheduled for 2027. The Austrian government has decided to phase out the physical adhesive toll vignette. The last red adhesive vignettes will be sold in 2026, and as of February 1, 2027, only the digital vignette will be valid. ASFINAG, the operator, noted that approximately 75 percent of drivers already use the digital version. The transition aims to modernize mobility, reduce paper consumption, and offer features like subscription models and automatic renewals.

Additionally, the calculation for the Standard Fuel Consumption Tax (NoVA) for new vehicles will become stricter starting January 1, 2027. The CO2 deduction amount will decrease from 91 to 88 grams per kilometer, which will increase the tax burden for many internal combustion engine vehicles. For example, a car with 163g CO2/km and a 40,000 Euro base price could see a tax increase of 400 Euro. Purely electric and hydrogen vehicles remain exempt from this tax.
