Austria to phase out paper motorway vignette, digital system mandatory from 2027

The Austrian government has decided to discontinue the adhesive (paper) motorway vignette after the 2026 season. Starting 1 February 2027 only a digital vignette will be accepted on Austrian highways and expressways, ending the dual system that has existed since 2017. The change is driven by the Ministry of Mobility, which cites modernisation, sustainability and user convenience.

In 2026 the annual vignette price rose 2.9 % to €106.80, with short‑term options priced at €9.60 for one day, €12.80 for ten days, €32.00 for two months, and lower rates for motorcycles. About 75 % of drivers already use the digital version, which can be purchased online, at roughly 6,000 sales points including fuel stations, toll plazas and motorist clubs, or still “analogously” at these locations for those without internet access. Missing a valid vignette incurs a fine.

For travelers heading to Italy, an Austrian vignette (digital after 2027) remains required until the border is crossed; Italy then applies a distance‑based toll system.
