Austria to phase out adhesive highway vignettes by 2027
Austria is transitioning to a fully digital toll vignette system. The traditional adhesive sticker will be sold for the last time in 2026, with the digital-only mandate taking effect on February 1, 2027.
ASFINAG, the operator of the motorway and expressway financing company, noted that approximately 75 percent of drivers already utilize the digital version. To ensure a smooth transition, the digital vignette can still be purchased through physical locations such as gas stations, toll booths, and motoring associations like ÖAMTC or ARBÖ for those without online access.
The Austrian Federal Ministry for Mobility described the move as a “important progress toward modern and sustainable mobility.” The shift aims to improve user convenience by offering features such as automatic renewals and reminder services, while also reducing paper consumption and production costs.
