Austria outlines UN Security Council priorities in Vienna
Austrian government officials held a press conference at the United Nations Office in Vienna to present the nation's strategic priorities ahead of its term on the UN Security Council, beginning January 1, 2027.
Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger identified three core pillars for Austria's two-year membership: the protection of international law and human dignity, the establishment of binding regulations for artificial intelligence in weaponry, and comprehensive United Nations reforms. Addressing the use of autonomous weapons, Meinl-Reisinger described the prospect of machines deciding life and death as a ‘nightmare scenario’ and called for clear international rules to prevent such outcomes.
The briefing, which included European Affairs Minister Claudia Bauer and State Secretary Jörg Leichtfried, also featured Monica Juma, Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The event highlighted Vienna's role as a global diplomatic hub through the Vienna International Centre, which hosts approximately 5,000 employees from 150 countries.
