Austria to raise and unify traffic fines nationwide from 2027

The Austrian federal government plans to harmonise and increase penalties for more than 100 traffic offences across all states starting 1 January 2027. Fines will be set at the highest current regional level, with examples such as €95 for crossing a stop line, €110 for ignoring a "no entry" sign, €80 for illegal use of a bicycle lane, €85 for endangering pedestrians on a protected crossing and €60 for illegal parking.

Speeding penalties will also rise: exceeding the limit by more than 30 km/h will attract at least €200 (up from €150), and the maximum fine for serious speed violations can reach €6,000. Vehicle confiscation rules are expanded to include leased, rental, company and family‑owned cars when drivers exceed 80 km/h in town or 90 km/h outside town, effective 1 October 2027. The reforms are justified by statistics showing that excessive speed contributed to over 16 % of accidents with injuries in 2025 and about one‑third of fatal crashes. The government expects the changes to generate roughly €80 million in additional annual revenue.
