Austria to replace 3.6 million paper licences, maintains four motorway vignette exemptions

Austria’s Ministry of Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure reports that about 3.6 million paper driving licences are still in circulation. All licences issued before 19 January 2013 must be exchanged for new card‑type documents by early 2033. The government will run an information campaign and urges drivers to apply early to avoid long queues; the fee for a replacement is €73.

The country also retains toll‑vignette exemptions on four specific motorway sections: the A1 Westautobahn between the Walserberg border crossing and the Salzburg Nord junction, the A12 Inntal from the German border at Kufstein to the Kufstein‑Süd exit, the A14 Rheintal/Walgau from the Hörbranz border to Hohenems, and the A26 near Linz (exemption remains until the segment is fully linked). Drivers must purchase a vignette for all other Austrian motorways and expressways.
