Austria to shorten integration exemption for asylum‑seeking mothers to two years

Austria’s Labour and Social Affairs Minister Korinna Schumann has proposed reducing the exemption period that frees asylum‑seeking mothers from mandatory integration measures from three years to two. Under the current rule, women with asylum status are not required to attend German language courses, qualification programmes or other integration activities until their child turns three.

The change is intended to give these women earlier access to German courses, vocational training and the labour market, thereby strengthening economic independence and social participation. The Integration Ministry notes that the draft Integration Obligation Act already provides German courses with childcare and flexible scheduling for women with children of any age.

Political parties have reacted: the NEOS party supports even shorter periods, the Greens welcome the step, while the FPÖ calls the proposal a “PR gimmick”. Recent figures from the Austrian Integration Fund show that only one‑quarter of asylum‑seeking women from Syria, Afghanistan or Iraq are employed and about 44,000 refugees are currently unemployed.
