Austria to transition to exclusively digital highway vignettes by 2027
Austria is set to phase out physical adhesive highway vignettes in favor of a fully digital system. The Austrian government has announced that the last red adhesive vignettes will be sold in 2026, with the digital-only mandate taking effect on February 1, 2027.
ASFINAG, the operator of the motorway network, noted that approximately 75 percent of motorists already utilize the digital version. The transition aims to modernize mobility by offering features such as subscription functions, automatic renewals, and reminder services. The Ministry for Mobility described the move as a step toward sustainable mobility, citing reduced paper consumption and production costs.
While the system is moving online, motorists without internet access can still purchase digital vignettes through analog channels, including gas stations, toll booths, and motoring clubs like ÖAMTC or ARBÖ.
