Austria Transport Minister considers stricter e-scooter rules

Austrian Transport Minister Peter Hanke (SPÖ) is considering stricter regulations for e-scooters to improve safety and curb what he describes as "rowdyism." A primary proposal involves extending the mandatory helmet requirement from the current age limit of 16 up to the age of adulthood (18).

Following the implementation of stricter rules in May, Hanke intends to review accident and injury statistics in early 2027. If safety data does not show significant improvement, further tightening of regulations may be discussed. Hanke, in coordination with Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP), aims to address the issue of e-scooters operating outside legal specifications and reduce accidents.

In addition to helmet mandates, existing regulations include new equipment requirements for e-scooters and a reduced blood alcohol limit of 0.5 permille. Regarding urban planning, Hanke emphasized the need for a balance between expanding public transport and maintaining adequate road connections to mitigate traffic congestion and CO2 emissions.
