Austria upgrades energy infrastructure with new power plant and substation
Austria has seen significant advancements in its energy infrastructure through two major projects. Verbund AG has officially restarted the revitalized Laufnitzdorf run-of-river hydroelectric power plant near Frohnleiten. Following a 65 million euro investment, the plant's capacity has increased from 18 to 24.3 megawatts, allowing it to meet the annual electricity needs of approximately 40,000 households.
The Laufnitzdorf project involved upgrading the historic 1931 facility with new turbines and generators while maintaining its protected architectural appearance. The revitalization also included extensive work on the Mixnitz weir and the implementation of new fish passage systems to improve ecological connectivity in the Mur river.
In a separate development, vorarlberg netz has commissioned the modernized and expanded Hohenems substation in Vorarlberg. The upgrade doubles the substation's power provision to 60 megavolt-amperes. This modernization aims to address increasing demands on the electrical grid caused by decentralized photovoltaic energy, electric mobility, and the electrification of heat supplies.
