Austrian agriculture faces crisis due to extreme drought

Extreme drought in Upper Austria is causing severe economic challenges for the agricultural sector, leading to significant crop losses and water supply issues for farming families. In regions such as Mühlviertel and Innviertel, existing wells and springs have dried up, forcing many livestock operations to consider expensive new deep wells to maintain operations.

The OÖ Bauernbund is calling on the provincial government to implement subsidies for water supply in isolated locations, noting that similar support exists in neighboring states like Lower Austria, Styria, and Salzburg. They are also advocating for origin labeling in gastronomy and stable agricultural financing within the EU framework.

Crop yields have been heavily impacted, with some farmers reporting losses between 50 and 70 percent. The potato harvest is particularly critical; yields have dropped from an average of 30 tons per hectare to approximately 10 tons due to dryness and pest infestations. Experts warn that while domestic supplies may last until February, the gastronomy sector will likely rely heavily on imports, such as potatoes from Egypt, for the remainder of the year.
