Austrian agriculture initiatives focus on education and organic standards
Austrian agricultural initiatives are focusing on education and consumer awareness. The “Aktions-Tage der Bäuerinnen” program, which has been running since 2015, aims to sensitize children to the origins of their food and the importance of sustainable consumption. By bringing agriculture into classrooms, the program reaches approximately 40,000 children annually. The 2026 theme will focus on the diversity of farms, including vegetable production, livestock, and forestry.
In conjunction with World Egg Day, BIO AUSTRIA is highlighting the importance of egg labeling to promote animal welfare. The first digit of the producer code indicates the method of rearing: ‘0’ signifies organic farming, ‘1’ indicates free-range, and ‘2’ denotes barn housing. Consumers are encouraged to look for the ‘0’ and ‘AT’ codes to support Austrian organic farmers and ensure higher standards for animal living conditions, such as access to outdoor areas and organic feed.
