Austrian Airlines renews EMAS certification and releases 2025 Environmental Report

Austrian Airlines has successfully renewed its registration in the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), completing its first three-year certification cycle. The airline, which has been EMAS-validated since 2023, released its 2025 Environmental Report alongside this renewal to highlight measurable progress in its sustainability efforts.

A key achievement noted in the report is the first full year of operation for AeroSHARK technology on four Boeing 777-200ER aircraft. Developed by Lufthansa Technik and BASF, this shark-skin-inspired surface film reduces aerodynamic drag. In its first year of use, the technology reduced drag by approximately 0.7%, resulting in an estimated saving of 930 tons of kerosene and the avoidance of nearly 3,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

The airline is also focusing on waste reduction, increasing the proportion of recyclable plastics and aluminum in its onboard service from 76% in 2024 to approximately 80% by the end of 2025, with a target of 100% by 2027. To support these goals, the company utilizes a network of over 40 environmental coordinators across various departments.
