Austrian Airlines has confirmed it will discontinue its long-standing route between Vienna and Zagreb, with the final flight scheduled for January 10, 2027. The decision marks the end of over four decades of service, which was only interrupted by the war and the COVID-19 pandemic. While the carrier will continue seasonal summer flights to Croatian coastal cities like Split, Zadar, and Dubrovnik, it will not reinstate the Zagreb connection for the 2027 summer season.

The withdrawal comes as Zagreb Airport faces a slowdown in passenger growth, reporting a 3.3 percent decrease in traffic for September 2026 compared to the previous year. The loss of the Austrian Airlines connection is considered significant because it provided travelers with access to the airline’s global hub in Vienna for onward international and transoceanic travel.

In contrast, Croatia Airlines is expanding its presence on the route, maintaining two daily flights between the two capitals during the upcoming winter season. Meanwhile, Sarajevo International Airport is entering its winter schedule with new Wizz Air destinations, including Bratislava, Berlin, and Prague, as part of an effort to increase connectivity and tourism.
