Austrian Alpine Rescues Save German Hiker and 74-Year-Old Woman

On 12 July, the Vorarlberg mountain rescue service retrieved a 29‑year‑old German woman from the summit of the Mondspitze after she called emergency services at night. She had reached the peak in street shoes and short trousers, without any light source, but was unharmed when rescuers arrived.

The previous night, a 53‑year‑old German man fell several metres down a steep slope in the Schwendau area of Tirol. He suffered injuries of unspecified severity and was taken to a hospital in Schwaz.

Later, after a four‑day search involving police, volunteers, a helicopter and a search dog, rescuers located a 74‑year‑old Austrian woman who had been missing since 13 July in the Osttirol mountains. She was found severely hypothermic but alive and was air‑lifted to a clinic.

These incidents highlight the dangers of alpine hiking and the coordinated rescue efforts of Austrian authorities.
