Austrian Armed Forces and Austrian Airlines launch pilot program
The Austrian Armed Forces (Bundesheer) and Austrian Airlines have launched a joint pilot project to allow military pilots to serve in civil aviation on a part-time basis. Under this arrangement, pilots will split their year between the two organizations: serving the Bundesheer from November to April and flying for Austrian Airlines from May to October.
The initiative aims to retain highly trained military pilots within the armed forces for longer periods. Previously, pilots could transition to civil aviation after completing an eight-year service commitment. This new model seeks to keep their expertise available to the military for at least an additional ten years through semi-annual service. For Austrian Airlines, the partnership provides increased flexibility to manage personnel shortages and peak flight periods.
The project begins with two pilots—one helicopter pilot and one jet pilot—starting Airbus A320 type training. This training is expected to conclude in the summer of 2027, with full part-time employment scheduled to begin in 2028. The Bundesheer will evaluate the results of the first season to determine the future implementation of the model.
