Austrian Armed Forces announce supersonic Eurofighter training

The Austrian Armed Forces will conduct their second supersonic training exercise of 2026 from November 3 to November 13. During this period, up to three supersonic flights are scheduled each weekday between 8:00 and 19:00.

The maneuvers are designed to train Eurofighter Typhoon crews in interception procedures and to test coordination between military pilots, radar control officers, and civilian air traffic control via Austro Control. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner noted that such training is indispensable, as Eurofighters are alerted approximately 50 times per year for airspace sovereignty missions.

To minimize noise pollution from sonic booms, acceleration to speeds exceeding 1,200 km/h will occur only at altitudes above 12,500 meters. A midday rest period is scheduled between 12:00 and 13:00, and no flights will take place on weekends. The exercises will cover most of Austria, excluding the states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg, as well as densely populated urban areas including Vienna and other state capitals.
