Austrian Armed Forces reports high interest in non-commissioned officer roles
Interest in non-commissioned officer roles within the Austrian Armed Forces remains high. In early September, over 1,000 men and women began training for the cadre candidate program, which serves as the initial step toward becoming a non-commissioned officer. Those with a high school diploma (Matura) also have the option to pursue an officer career path.
In February 2026, 473 young non-commissioned officers graduated from the Army Non-Commissioned Officer Academy in Enns after 18 months of training. These graduates are tasked with responsibilities such as group command, training basic recruits, and participating in domestic and international missions.
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner stated that recent investments in improving the attractiveness of the non-commissioned officer profession are yielding results. To support recruitment and retention, the military has introduced measures such as a mentorship program for cadre candidates designed to assist with professional development and reduce training dropout rates.
