Austrian Audit Office Pressed to Independently Scrutinise Tourism Funding

The Communist Party (KPÖ) and Social Democrats (SPÖ) in the Salzburg state parliament are urging a amendment that would allow the Landesrechnungshof to carry out independent audits of tourism associations. The move follows disputes over financial transparency in the Saalbach‑Hinterglemm and Hallein tourism bodies, which together manage more than €50 million in public funds each year.

The Landesrechnungshof director René Wenk is also under fire from state governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ), who described Wenk’s recent comments on state finances as “plainly wrong”. The conflict, which dates back to Wenk’s 2022 election for a term through 2032, reflects broader tensions over the audit office’s role and its relationship with the regional government.
