Austrian Authorities Expand Juvenile Rehabilitation While Sentencing Home Invasion Perpetrator

In Simmering, Vienna, a newly opened residential facility for young intensive offenders houses a 13‑year‑old who has committed multiple offenses. The program follows a strict daily schedule that includes school lessons, sports, therapeutic activities and limited access to a PlayStation and TV. Critics, including district head Thomas Steinhart, claim the city did not adequately inform them about security measures before the opening.

In Langenzersdorf, Lower Austria, a 19‑year‑old man was sentenced by the Wiener Landesgericht to seven years in prison for a December home invasion in which he and an accomplice pretended to be installers, robbed an 88‑year‑old pensioner and caused serious injuries. The court noted his admission of motives linked to drug and gambling debts and the severe impact on the victim, who now requires ongoing care.
