Austrian authorities increase inspections for heavy vehicles and construction sites

In Vorarlberg, Austria, police and ASFINAG conducted targeted inspections of heavy goods vehicles from Monday to Thursday. Out of 47 vehicles checked, 22 were prohibited from continuing their journeys due to severe technical defects deemed an immediate danger. Notable violations included a Lithuanian-registered semi-trailer with four destroyed tires, a Polish vehicle with malfunctioning brakes on two out of three axles, and a Moroccan vehicle with failed steering joints.

Authorities reported 57 severe defects and 69 other immediate dangers, alongside numerous violations regarding driving and rest periods. To secure administrative proceedings, 38 provisional security payments were collected.

Separately, ASFINAG and police have increased surveillance at the S-10 Mühlviertler Schnellstraße construction site in Rainbach. This measure follows incidents of unauthorized entry by pedestrians, cyclists, and riders bypassing barriers. ASFINAG warned of hidden dangers such as deep shafts and tensioned wires used for asphalt work. The heightened security includes regular patrols and camera monitoring to prevent accidents at the site, which is expected to open for traffic in autumn 2027.
