Austrian bakery Rye opens in New York with $60 rye bread

The Austrian family-owned bakery Rye has opened a new location in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, drawing significant attention for its $60 price tag per 1.5-kilogram loaf of organic rye sourdough bread.

Founder Martin Auer, whose family business in Graz, Austria, spans three generations and includes 45 locations, explained that the high cost reflects the luxury location, imported ingredients, and specialized production methods. The bakery uses a 57-year-old starter culture and an imported two-ton oven from Germany.

While the pricing sparked criticism on social media, Tim Auer, the founder's son, noted that the bread has been well-received in New York. He emphasized that the price is part of a luxury gastronomic experience in one of the world's most expensive cities, where ingredients and even the wooden counter are imported from Austria.
