Austrian business sector shows growth and investment optimism
Austrian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) maintain a positive outlook despite economic challenges such as rising costs, labor shortages, and geopolitical uncertainty. According to a study by Erste Bank and Sparkassen, 66 percent of local SMEs are optimistic about the next two to three years, with 58 percent planning specific investments.
To support this momentum, Erste Bank and Sparkassen have introduced a 'growth billion'—a one-billion-euro financing volume intended to provide additional financial space for future-oriented investments. Companies are particularly focusing on digitalization, automation, and energy efficiency to remain competitive.
In the startup sector, the first half of 2026 saw a significant surge in venture capital, with 472 million euros invested—a 329 percent increase compared to the previous year. While the number of financing rounds reached a record high of 97, a significant gender gap persists in capital distribution. Data shows that 94.9 percent of capital allocated to established founding teams went to all-male teams, while all-female teams received only 0.3 percent.
