Austrian Chancellor Stocker warns of potential unrest following France riots
Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker has issued a warning regarding potential civil unrest, citing recent violent protests and looting in France as a cautionary example. Stocker stated that the events in France “must be a warning to us” and emphasized that any upcoming demonstrations in Austria must remain peaceful.
The Chancellor highlighted the importance of Austria’s distinct political debate culture, which he described as one centered on dialogue and seeking conversation rather than violence. He noted that while the right to protest is important, security forces must act to prevent demonstrations from escalating.
Stocker specifically called for the prevention of anti-state activities by Islamist and far-left extremist groups that might attempt to infiltrate protest movements. He indicated that Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and the Austrian Federal Police would be responsible for ensuring public safety and maintaining order during any planned demonstrations.
