Austrian coalition faces internal leadership unrest
The Austrian coalition government, composed of the ÖVP and SPÖ, is facing significant internal turbulence following the summer break. While the administration remains functional, political commentators describe the coalition as “leaking” due to underlying instability.
Internal unrest is growing within both major parties. Within the ÖVP and SPÖ, there are reports of officials privately considering changes in party leadership. In the SPÖ, Gerhard Zeiler, a former federal manager and media executive, is being discussed as a potential successor to Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler. Such a leadership shift within the SPÖ could potentially destabilize the position of Chancellor Christian Stocker as well.
