Austrian Cobra officers under investigation after identity error
Austrian authorities have launched an investigation into Cobra special unit officers following a botched arrest in Tyrol. During the operation, officers mistakenly identified and subdued a 54-year-old man, believing him to be his son, a 36-year-old suspect.
The 54-year-old victim sustained rib fractures, bruising, and a meniscus injury during the encounter, forcing him to postpone a scheduled heart surgery. The incident stemmed from a domestic dispute in which the 36-year-old man took his seven-year-old son following a disagreement with his wife. Although police initially believed the suspect might be armed or holding a hostage, the man was found to be unarmed, and investigations into threats or kidnapping were subsequently dropped.
Prosecutors are currently investigating the officers for suspected bodily harm through abuse of office. A final report is pending to determine the full circumstances of the error.
