Austria court case: BiH citizen accused of €300,000 social security fraud

A 60-year-old citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina, along with his wife and daughter-in-law, is facing trial at the Regional Court in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, for alleged large-scale social security fraud.

Prosecutors claim the man misrepresented his health status following a stroke to secure higher levels of care assistance and disability pensions. Between March 2022 and October 2024, he allegedly simulated severe mobility issues, incontinence, and cognitive impairments during medical examinations at the Austrian Pension Insurance Institution (PVA).

The total estimated damage, including potential future claims, exceeds €300,000. The indictment specifies that the accused received approximately €23,724 in care assistance, €23,073 in rehabilitation supplements, and roughly €21,208 in disability pensions during specific periods. His wife and daughter-in-law are also charged with providing false information to authorities to facilitate these payments.
