Austrian cucumber growers warn of rising Indian imports

At a press conference in Hartkirchen on 28 July 2026, representatives of Austrian cucumber producers highlighted an increasing share of pickles imported from India in the domestic market. Mag. Robert Pichler, chairman of the advocacy group Wirtschaften am Land, noted that many consumers cannot identify the origin of cucumbers, especially store‑brand products, leading to a hidden influx of foreign produce.

Mag. Thomas Krahofer, managing director of EF‑Ko, and Mag. Franz Waldenberger, president of the Lower Austrian Agricultural Chamber, warned that this import pressure threatens local farms, jobs and regional value‑added production. They called for greater transparency on labeling to safeguard domestic agriculture and maintain regional supply chains.

The event, organised by Wirtschaften am Land and the Lower Austrian Agricultural Chamber, urged policymakers and retailers to improve origin labeling and support Austrian growers against the growing competition from Indian cucumber imports.
