Austrian cultural venues celebrate major anniversaries

Several prominent Austrian alternative cultural venues are celebrating major milestones in 2026.

Arena Wien will mark its 50th anniversary with the release of ‘Drüben im Dritten’, a book by Claus Oistric. The work documents the history of the venue, which originated from an activist occupation of an old slaughterhouse in 1976. The book features accounts from various witnesses and musical figures, including Patti Smith and Napalm Death, tracing the site's evolution into a central hub for subculture and social debate.

In Wiener Neustadt, the cultural center Triebwerk is celebrating 30 years of operation. To mark the occasion, a three-day festival titled ‘Unkaputtbar seit 1996’ will take place from September 3 to 5, 2026. The event will feature a mix of live music and cabaret, including performances by artists such as Petrol Girls, Luisa Schweig, and Romeo Kaltenbrunner.
