Austrian dialect greetings remain widespread despite rise of ‘Hallo’

A study conducted by researchers at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), led by linguist Katharina Korecky-Kröll, reveals that traditional dialect greetings are not disappearing in rural Austria. While the interregional greeting ‘Hallo’ has become the most frequent due to its perception as neutral, traditional forms like ‘Grüß Gott’ and ‘Griaß di’ remain widespread.

The research also refutes the common assumption that younger generations greet people less frequently than older ones. However, age-based differences in usage were noted: younger individuals are more likely to use ‘Hallo’ with strangers, whereas older individuals tend to reserve certain greetings for family and friends.

Regional variations persist, such as the use of ‘Pfiat di’ as a farewell in western rural areas. The study also noted that the term ‘Heil’ or ‘Heile’ remains a highly localized greeting in parts of Vorarlberg and Tyrol, though its use varies depending on the perceived social context and associations.
