Austrian Disability Council urges inclusive education reform

The Austrian Disability Council and the Austrian Trade Union Federation (ÖGB) are calling for the concrete implementation of reforms aimed at inclusive education. While acknowledging that the foundational pillars of the reform have been established following previous criticisms, the organizations emphasize that the ultimate goal must be the strengthening of equal access to the general education system and the gradual dismantling of segregating structures, such as special schools.

Klaus Widl, President of the Austrian Disability Council, noted that the reform must align with Austria’s commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Key demands include a legal entitlement to an 11th and 12th school year for students with special educational needs and ensuring that inclusive pedagogy is integrated into the training of all educators rather than being treated as a niche specialty.

The push for reform follows an open letter sent in May to Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr, which highlighted deficiencies in the current implementation plans. Advocates argue that true equality of opportunity cannot exist as long as certain educational paths remain effectively closed to people with disabilities.
