Austrian Disaster Relief Unit earns top global certification
The Austrian Disaster Relief Unit (AFDRU), a specialized unit of the Austrian Armed Forces, has successfully completed an international evaluation, earning a five-year certification renewal for global deployment. During a two-day exercise held in Eggendorf and Großmittel, the unit demonstrated its capabilities by managing four realistic disaster scenarios.
Tasks included locating and rescuing buried individuals using search dogs and technical equipment, such as acoustic locating devices, as well as providing initial medical care. The evaluation also covered organizational logistics, including unit mobilization, travel to deployment sites, infrastructure setup, and the ability to maintain self-sufficiency during extended operations without external support.
International experts conducted the assessment, which is performed every five years by United Nations (UN) specialists to ensure standardized quality for cross-border missions. The AFDRU, founded in 1990, consists of professional and militia soldiers and can integrate civilian specialists when required. The exercise also involved cooperation with a unit from the German Technical Relief Organization (THW). According to the Austrian Armed Forces, the unit achieved the highest score globally.
