Austrian drivers receive delayed Italian toll bills years later

Italian highway authorities sometimes send toll arrears notices to Austrian motorists many years after their trips. An example involved an Austrian driver who was asked to pay €1.36 in tolls plus €4.78 in collection fees after a decade had passed. The 10‑year limitation period means the authorities may take time to identify the vehicle owner. The electronic “Free Flow” toll system, especially around Milan, can generate such late charges when drivers either do not register beforehand or fail to pay within 15 days.

Austrian motoring clubs advise travelers to verify whether they have paid any tolls before leaving Italy, keep receipts and, if necessary, contest implausible claims. They also warn that fuel prices in Italy are significantly higher than in Austria—about €91 for 50 L of gasoline—while other nearby countries may be even more expensive. Different speed limits, blood‑alcohol limits and penalty amounts further underline the need for thorough pre‑trip research.
