Austrian Economic Chamber faces leadership crisis amid resignations

The Austrian Wirtschaftskammer (WKO) is in turmoil after two successive presidential resignations. In November, President Harald Mahrer stepped down following revelations of planned large salary increases for chamber staff. His successor, Walter Ruck, resigned weeks later after a secretly recorded conversation was leaked in which he made disparaging remarks about women and party colleagues.

The scandals have intensified a broader legitimacy problem for the chamber, whose mandatory membership sees low engagement – the recent election turnout was about 25 %. Political scientist Peter Filzmaier notes that growing political polarization and the rise of parties beyond the traditional ÖVP and SPÖ are eroding the historic consensus that once gave the chamber its influence. Critics call for structural reforms, such as reducing the nine regional chambers to a smaller number and introducing systematic feedback mechanisms to better represent members.

The crisis highlights tensions between the chamber’s historic role as a pillar of Austria’s social partnership model and contemporary demands for transparency and accountability.
