Austrian festivals conclude season in Burgenland

The Seefestspiele Mörbisch and Oper im Steinbruch have concluded their performance seasons in Burgenland, Austria.

At the Seefestspiele Mörbisch, the musical “La Cage aux Folles” (Ein Käfig voller Narren) drew approximately 105,327 visitors. While this figure is roughly 50,000 fewer than in previous years, Intendant Alfons Haider noted that the production aimed to provide “entertainment with attitude,” focusing on themes of tolerance and individual freedom. Despite the lower attendance, the production received positive reviews. Looking ahead, the festival has already sold 50,000 tickets for the 2027 production of “Mamma Mia!”.

Meanwhile, the Oper im Steinbruch in Sankt Margarethen attracted around 90,000 visitors for its production of “Tosca”. Intendant Daniel Serafin expressed satisfaction with the stable attendance numbers, noting the production's ability to attract audiences from beyond Austria's borders. The opera house is scheduled to present “Rigoletto” by Giuseppe Verdi next year.
