Austrian film industry secures four entries in Oscar race

The Austrian film industry has secured a significant presence in the current Academy Awards race, with four films involving Austrian participation or co-production submitted for the Best International Feature Film category.

Austria’s official entry is Markus Schleinzer’s “Rose,” starring Sandra Hüller, who recently won the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlinale. The film, set in 17th-century Germany during the Thirty Years’ War, follows a character who presents as a man to claim land in a secluded village. “Rose” is scheduled for select U.S. theatrical release starting December 11.

Other notable productions include “Everytime,” an Austrian-German co-production directed by Sandra Wollner, and the Bulgarian entry “Das geträumte Abenteuer,” which involved the Vienna-based production company Panama Film. Additionally, the Egyptian candidate “The Stories,” directed by Abu Bakr Shawky and starring Valerie Pachner, was produced with majoritarian partnership from Film AG.
