Austrian Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer, 61, announced that he has been diagnosed with lymphoma. He will begin a three‑month treatment course at Vienna’s General Hospital (AKH) while continuing to fulfil his ministerial duties. Marterbauer said the therapy will be scheduled as additional appointments in his official calendar and may occasionally require the rescheduling of other meetings, but it will be organised so that he can “fully fulfill my duties and responsibilities.”

The minister, a member of the governing coalition of the People's Party, Social Democrats and NEOS, has been a popular figure in the government’s effort to bring Austria’s budget deficit back within the EU’s 3 % limit. He emphasized that Austria’s advanced healthcare system gives him very good chances of recovery.
