Austrian firefighter suspected of starting fires to seek excitement

Police in Burgenland, Austria, have arrested a firefighter suspected of intentionally starting multiple fires in the Oberpullendorf district during July and August. Investigators believe the man, aged 27 or 28, ignited dry grass, leaves, and vegetation to trigger emergencies.

In a highly unusual pattern, the suspect reportedly participated in extinguishing the very fires he started. In two instances, he even personally alerted emergency services after setting the flames. One incident involved him throwing burning sandwich paper from a vehicle onto dry grass near the B50 federal road.

During questioning, the man reportedly admitted to starting at least three fires, claiming his motive was a desire for excitement and a wish to ‘be on duty.’ While the fires were quickly brought under control and caused no injuries or significant property damage, the suspect now faces criminal consequences for his actions.
