Austrian Government Advances Bike Path Projects Amid Landowner Concerns

In Upper Austria, Verkehrslandesrat Günther Steinkellner (FPÖ) announced that the state will seek expropriation of small landowners to expand bike paths, noting that no legal precedent exists. The Independent Farmers’ Association criticised the plan, urging the Agricultural Chamber, the Farmers’ Association and the FPÖ‑farmers to support affected owners financially and legally.

In the Pinzgau region, the state resolved the long‑standing partial closure of the Tauernradweg near Weißbach by purchasing farmland from six farmers for about €25,000. The acquired 3.3 km of land will host a new, physically separated bike route, part of a €5 million project expected to begin construction this year and finish next year. Officials highlighted cycling tourism as a significant economic driver, with up to 600 cyclists on peak days and tourists spending roughly €200 per day.
