Austrian government warns of state overload regarding family reunification

The Austrian federal government has stated that admitting more than 314 people through family reunification processes threatens to cause a state-wide overload. Internal documents suggest the basis for this specific figure was previously undisclosed.

Data from the past 11 years shows that 235,000 protection titles were granted to asylum seekers in Austria. Approximately 120,000 applicants left the country before a decision was made, while a similar number were denied protection. In two-thirds of decided cases, individuals were found to be in need of protection. Within the subgroup of family reunification, the rate of protection being granted is 100 percent, as applicants are typically close relatives of those already granted status.

Family reunification accounts for approximately 10 percent, or 45,000, of all applications since 2015. In 2023 and 2024, this process resulted in roughly 5,000 children aged 6 to 10 entering the country, which reportedly caused some primary schools to feel overwhelmed. However, reports suggest this was due to administrative management and communication issues rather than a lack of capacity within the national school system.
