Austrian Greens oppose new healthcare copayment proposals
The Austrian Green Party has raised alarms in the National Council regarding proposals from economic representatives to introduce cost-saving measures in the social insurance healthcare system. The debate centered on potential new copayments and tiered deductibles for medical visits.
Green Party health spokesperson Ralph Schallmeiner argued against these measures, stating that “being sick must not be a luxury” and warned against cuts being implemented through the back door. The Freedom Party (FPÖ) also rejected the proposals, suggesting that increased costs for doctor visits would drive patients toward already overcrowded hospitals.
Social Minister Korinna Schumann (SPÖ) responded by rejecting the proposals, asserting that the solution to rising healthcare costs is better resource management rather than increasing the financial burden on patients. However, Green Party leadership expressed skepticism regarding these assurances, citing previous decisions to increase deductibles for essential dental work.
