Austrian holiday traffic creates extensive highway jams

Heavy holiday travel on Saturday morning caused severe congestion on Austria’s main routes. The Karawanken Autobahn (A11) near the Karawanken Tunnel in Carinthia saw a queue of 7‑9 km and waits of more than an hour for drivers heading to Slovenia. In Tyrol, the Fernpass road (B179) experienced delays of up to 20 minutes, while the Inntal Autobahn (A12) at the German border recorded 15‑minute hold‑ups. A construction site ahead of the Herzogberg Tunnel in Styria added a six‑kilometre backup.

An accident on the Brenner Autobahn (A22) near Neumarkt in South Tyrol, Italy, quickly formed a 13‑kilometre jam and caused another hour of delay. Austrian traffic authorities (ÖAMTC, ASFINAG) noted that the peak of the disruption had not yet been reached.
